Designing for Change Cohort
The unit begins with shared inquiry and gradually shifts toward individual research and action, allowing students to explore real-world issues they care about while developing strong reading, writing, and analytical skills.
Week 1: Identifying Global ProblemsIn the opening week, students will brainstorm and discuss problems they see in the world today. The instructor will help guide discussion and may introduce additional issues students may not initially consider.
During this week, students will begin reading A Long Walk to Water and explore the importance of clean water for survival, healthcare, and agriculture, using the text as an anchor for discussion.
Weeks 2–6: Student-Selected Global IssuesFrom the class brainstorm, students will collaboratively select five global issues to study more deeply. These may include topics such as:
- access to clean water
- climate change
- homelessness
- food insecurity
- war and displacement
Students are also encouraged to bring forward issues that matter personally to them, and the remaining weeks of the unit will be shaped around the group’s interests.
Through reading, discussion, research, and integrated science and social studies exploration, students will examine:
- causes and impacts of each issue
- how these problems affect communities locally and globally
- existing efforts to address them
Students will choose one global issue studied during the unit to focus on individually. This week is dedicated to research, planning, and developing a realistic solution or call to action connected to their chosen problem.
Week 8: Activism & Mastery ProjectIn the final week, students will demonstrate their learning through a culminating mastery project. Students may choose to:
- create an activism or awareness project designed to inspire or create change
- or write a persuasive essay encouraging others to take action
This final project emphasizes student voice, choice, and real-world application rather than a single prescribed outcome.
